Public Statement to Students

Nov 1, 2024 | Governance

NAITSA is deeply disappointed by the sudden departure of Gerard Hayes, former NAIT Vice-President of Students & Campus Life. Gerard’s dedicated efforts and student-centred approach profoundly shaped services that impact students daily, from Parking Services to Learning Services. His reorganization of departments and introduction of student-focused initiatives enhanced the campus experience, ensuring that student needs remained at the forefront of decision-making. His unwavering support of Athletics and Recreation and frequent attendance at Ooks games highlighted his commitment to fostering school spirit and encouraging a vibrant campus community. His visible presence at every new student orientation over the past two years underscored his commitment to ensuring students recognized him as their advocate from day one. He truly embodied the role of VP Students and Campus Life.

Gerard set a powerful example of a leader who genuinely cares about students, creating an unmistakable contrast to those who may not prioritize student concerns. Known for his direct approach, he made himself accessible to students by regularly engaging in conversations, attending student events, and actively immersing himself in the realities of student life. We are grateful for his contributions and advocacy, which have left an indelible impact, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

NAITSA is disappointed with NAIT’s handling of this transition, particularly regarding their lack of timely communication with the student body. Upon learning of Mr. Hayes’ departure on Friday, October 25, 2024, NAITSA’s leadership requested immediate student communications to address the change; however, yet again students have been left in the dark on decisions that directly affect their campus experience. Disturbingly, NAIT Executives have indicated that the replacement of the VP Students and Campus life is not an urgent matter. They also failed to ask us how this decision will impact students, illustrating the deprioritization of student interests.

We understand that many students may feel frustrated by not being informed about significant leadership changes within NAIT but also concerned that the cost of those changes will fall upon students. The NAITSA Executive Council is committed to advocating to NAIT administration on the vital importance of a robust student-centric approach that encompasses academics and campus life. We will continue to hold NAIT accountable for timely and transparent communication.

Sincerely,

Jenna Luczak (President), Marina Bruno (VP Academic), Brayden Shopland (VP Internal)
