What does a Global OOKSTAR volunteer do?

The IICC hosts many events and workshops for the international students and always needs volunteers to help at these events. Our volunteers are often here to help with event setup, event participants check-ins, handing out snacks and event supplies, supporting game stations, and other tasks to support the community.

Requirements to Join & Training

  • You must be a current NAIT student or staff member.
(NOTE: current NAIT student = you have started your first day of class at NAIT)
  • You are passionate about supporting the success of international and newcomer students at NAIT.
  • You must attend one of the MANDATORY volunteer onboarding sessions (in-person): We host volunteer onboarding sessions at various times throughout the year. This training has a 1-year expiry date which means once you complete a training, you will become an “active volunteer” to receive emails about upcoming volunteer opportunities and shifts. You will lose your “active volunteer” status 1 year after the training, but you can attend another training to refresh your status.

Volunteer Appreciation

Any volunteers who have contributed at least 8 hours of volunteering within a school year will be invited to our annual volunteer appreciation party and receive a volunteer letter from us. Other incentives may be awarded to exceptional volunteers!

For more details, please get in touch with us at intercultural@nait.ca. You can also visit us in person for questions at the IICC in room W101. We are always happy to help!

FAQs

Why introduce mandatory volunteer training?

It’s crucial for keeping all our volunteers aligned on program details, expectations, and how we work together. We’ve faced challenges trying to sync up new and returning volunteers solely through pre-shift briefings, as everyone comes in with different past experiences and expectations.
That’s why this onboarding training is now a must for everyone keen to volunteer with the IICC, including our current volunteers.

What can I expect at a Volunteer Onboarding Session?

At each session, we start off with an introduction and a fun icebreaker. After that, we provide a comprehensive overview of the roles and expectations for Global OOKSTARS volunteers.
Next, we engage in a focused discussion on how we work together and interact with other during a volunteer shift.
The training session also covers essential volunteer procedures, including updates on shifts, the technology we use, tracking of volunteer hours, volunteer recognition practices, and our feedback system.
Prepare to immerse yourself in the session and become an integral part of our team!

Does it replace the shift briefing?

It depends! If your role involves more complex tasks, we’ll definitely do a pre-shift briefing. We’ll also keep you posted with any extra info you might need via emails.
For simpler tasks that are easy to follow, no need for a debrief beforehand. Just come in on your shift day and we’ll fill you in with all you need to know right then and there!

What is the timeline of implementing this new process?

Starting this month (July 2024), we will be informing current contacts on our volunteer list via emails about the changes.
Starting in August 2024, we will only be sharing upcoming volunteer opportunities with those completed the required training.
