Now Hiring – Opinion Editor at the NAIT Nugget for 2025-26
Do you have strong opinions and the ability to back them up? Are you passionate about exploring different perspectives, challenging ideas, and making people think? If you love a good debate, know how to craft a compelling argument, and want to lead a section that sparks discussion, apply to be our next Opinion Editor! You’ll write about everything from issues on campus to album reviews to satirical essays that poke fun at the world around us. You don’t need to be an experienced journalist—just someone who loves sharing their voice, values accuracy, and wants to help keep students informed.
What you’ll do:
- Lead our Opinion section: Oversee coverage in your section, setting the tone and ensuring standards are met. This includes assigning stories to contributors, sending emails, light editing of your section’s pieces, and discussing with Senior Editor/Editor-in-Chief any editorial concerns.
- Find and shape relevant arguments: Help our contributors refine and support their hot takes, ensuring their arguments are supported, well-researched, persuasive and impactful for our audience
- Encourage debate and dialogue: Seek out diverse voices and viewpoints, making space for a variety of perspectives. Stay up-to-date with what’s happening on campus and the popular voice so you can suggest stories for you and your section.
- Guide contributors: Work with a team of student reporters, helping them refine their storytelling and push their creative boundaries. This includes answering their questions, explaining how the Nugget works, offering support or guidance where needed.
- Make confident decisions: You’ll have the authority over your section, so you’ll assign stories, set the standard, and help make editorial decisions
- Create compelling content: Responsible for minimum 1 story a week, whether it’s written or digital—openness to multimedia storytelling (appearing in video, podcasts, social media) is a must.
What we’re looking for:
- A critical thinker who can analyze issues from multiple angles. You must be comfortable challenging people, as the opinion section gets to say it like it is (backed up by research!).
- A creative mind and curious thinker. It takes work to find stories and know what people are talking about, so you’ll need to be curious and creative to find and capture stories.
- A great communicator who knows how to stay organized. You’ll be the lead of a section, so you will be juggling a lot of projects—both your own and your contributors! You should know when to ask for help and be great with deadlines.
- A leader who can set the tone for your section. Contributors will look to you for story ideas and guidance. Your Senior Editor and Editor-in-Chief will be there to support you, but we want someone who can take charge and make decisions.
Qualifications:
- You’re a current NAIT student enrolled in classes from September 2025-April 2026. This is a part-time salary position that begins August 1, 2025 and ends April 15, 2026. You must be enrolled in classes in both the Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 terms to be eligible. The salary for this position is $500/month.
- Strong writing and fact-checking skills
- Available for a minimum of 10 hours per week, starting August 1, 2025
- Previous experience with the Nugget is a bonus
