Senior Editor – NAIT Nugget (July Hire Date)

NAITSA is a non-profit organization that provides services, representation, and leadership to students enrolled in credit and apprenticeship programs in one of Canada’s largest polytechnic institutions, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). The NAIT Nugget, part of the NAIT Students’ Association, is the official student-run media source on NAIT Campus with the main purpose to deliver unique content that aims to keep the NAIT community informed through accurate, fair, and truthful news.

The Senior Editor plays a vital role in supporting the editorial operations for the NAIT Nugget, helping ensure content quality, contributor and editor development, and strong engagement with the student community. If you are a curious, creative, and emerging leader (preferably with news media experience), and you are interested in amplifying the student voice through news, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief (EIC), this position has the following overall responsibilities:

Recruitment & Outreach

  • Plan and coordinate recruitment initiatives to promote the Nugget and attract new contributors.
  • Represent the publication at on-campus events such as orientation and student service fair by setting up and managing promotional booths.
  • Collaborate with the EIC to develop and execute marketing and recruitment strategies aimed at building awareness and encouraging student participation.
  • Contribute to annual recruitment of student section editors, including supporting the EIC with maintaining up-to-date position descriptions and reviewing job candidates.

Administrative Support

  • Send timely, constructive, and balanced feedback to contributors on their submissions.
  • Submit cheque requests and support other basic administrative processes related to contributor payments and Nugget operations.
  • Coordinate the distribution of the Nugget publication (currently 9 print issues per academic year).

Contributor & Section Support

  • Act as the first point of contact for contributors, offering guidance, answering questions, and providing editorial support.
  • Assist section editors with coordinating and reviewing content as needed.
  • Meet with contributors, as needed, to provide mentorship, editorial feedback, and writing support.
  • Stay “in the know” on a broad range of topics including important events on campus and information relevant to the NAIT community.

Editing & Quality Control

  • Conduct first and second edits on all article submissions from both freelancer contributors and section editors.
  • Ensure all content adheres to Canadian Press (CP) style and aligns with the Nugget’s standards and tone.
  • Ensure all information published in alignment with ethical standards, properly verified, and all sources are credited.
  • Deliver clear, developmental feedback with a focus on helping contributors improve their journalistic skills.

Website & Digital Content Management

  • Upload and publish articles to the website using the SEO strategy developed by the EIC.
  • Source or create appropriate cover images for articles.
  • Collaborate with the photo and graphics editor to identify and fulfill visual content needs, enhancing overall article presentation.

Qualifications / Required Skills / Considerations

If you’re interested in being a part of this team, there are several key skills and attributes you should make sure to review before you apply:

Qualifications:

  • Education: Post-secondary diploma or degree in journalism, communications, English, business administration, or a related field. Equivalent work experience will be considered, but prior experience in post-secondary environment is a huge asset to working within it.
  • Experience writing or editing content—journalism preferred, but other forms (creative, academic, professional) are acceptable.
  • Demonstrated experience in editing others’ work and providing constructive feedback, whether in academic, professional, or creative settings.
  • You are confident leading peers and can demonstrate prior experience in mentorship or collaborative settings such as project teams, editorial groups, or similar environments.
  • Prior experience in an editorial setting is a strong asset, including story pitching, idea refinement, or content planning.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) style or willingness to learn.
  • Technologically proficient—comfortable with content management systems (i.e., WordPress), basic website maintenance, and using collaborative tools like Google Workspace.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and thrives working in a collaborative environment.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgement and support the publication’s tone in accordance with journalistic standards and practices.

Considerations / Assets:

  • NAIT Alumni or familiarity with the institution is considered an asset
  • Previous leadership experience is a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is a strong asset.

Employment Details

Position Status:

  • Full-Time Permanent. The standard work week for this position is 37.5 hours. However, during June-July, the Senior Editor is expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, offering greater flexibility outside of the publication’s peak time. Please note this is subject to operational needs and could change with notice.
  • Start Date: This position is expected to commence in early July.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: Nugget Office, O105, 11762 106 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5G 3H4. Occasional flexibility for hybrid work.
  • Work Hours: Monday to Friday, standard office hours. Some occasional evenings or weekends may be required to support publication deadlines and/or editorial staff availability.
  • Physical Requirements: Primarily office-based work with occasional requirements for event participation, booth setup, carrying materials to events, and distributing the paper.

What We Offer:

  • Salary: $38,000-$40,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
  • Paid time off package including Vacation, Personal Choice Days, 3 Summer Fridays, Fall Break, and two-weeks off at the end of December.
