Important Update for NAIT Students

Ongoing Bargaining Between NAIT and NASA

NAITSA is committed to keeping NAIT students informed about the ongoing collective bargaining process between NAIT and NASA, the union representing instructors and academic staff. Since the previous agreement expired in June 2024, negotiations have been underway to establish a new contract.

NAITSA will continue to share official updates, explain what developments may mean for students, and provide clear, timely information as the situation evolves. Our goal is to ensure students have access to accurate information and understand how potential changes could affect their academic experience.

NAITSA will continue to monitor the situation closely and will share updates with students as more information becomes available.

January 16, 2026

NAIT has announced that its Board of Governors has voted to authorize a lockout as part of the ongoing bargaining process with NASA, the union representing NAIT academic staff.

A lockout authorization does not mean a lockout is happening at this time. Similar to a strike authorization, it is a legal step that allows NAIT to take job action later, if required, with proper notice.

For students, classes and academic activities are continuing as scheduled unless formal notice is provided. No changes take effect without official communication.

January 15, 2026

NAIT and NASA, the union representing instructors and many academic staff, have been negotiating a new collective agreement since the previous one expired in June 2024.

NAITSA acknowledges instructors’ rights to bargain collectively and is sharing this information so students are aware of the current situation and its potential impacts.

On January 15 at 4:00 p.m., NASA announced the results of its strike vote. With 83 percent of eligible members participating, 83 percent voted in favour of a strike mandate. These results are unofficial pending verification by the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

A strike vote does not mean that a strike will occur immediately. Bargaining may continue, and a collective agreement can still be reached. However, the vote provides the union with the option to pursue job action if negotiations do not progress.
