This is an opportunity where we are always looking for volunteers. Help adults build confidence in conversation and navigating English settings in their daily lives, work, and school! Tutors facilitate 1-on-1 sessions and/or small group classes to help learners develop foundational English literacy skills and accomplish their goals. Tutors are welcome to use the PALS office space in downtown Edmonton or meet at a public library with their learners.
Qualifications:
• Reliable, flexible, patient, respectful, empathetic, and compassionate
• Caring attitude, a sense of humour, and cultural awareness
• Good command of written and oral English
• Able to commit to about two hours a week for up to 3-months (small group) or 1 year (one-on-one).
Responsibilities as a LELL Tutor:
• Attend orientation and program training (additional professional development available if interested)
• Communicate with the Program Coordinator on a regular basis regarding the learners’ progress, achievements and/or concerns
• Complete reports and outcomes as required
• Adhere to PALS Policies
Responsibilities to Learners:
• Meet with learners on a regular basis, usually once per week for about 2 hours
• Create a welcoming, safe, positive learning environment
• Build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect
• Maintain confidentiality
• Help learners achieve their learning goals
• Build on the learner’s prior skills
• Recognize and acknowledge the learners’ progress and achievements
