Plan Ahead for Success

A little prep now can go a long way later. By getting organized before applications open, you’ll save time, reduce stress, and put your best foot forward when a position you love becomes available.

Try these helpful planning tips:

  • Review previous postings (if available) to see what skills or experience are valuable.
  • Prepare a general resume and cover letter you can easily tailor later.
  • Follow @OoksLife and NAITSA on social media — we post when new jobs open!
  • Reach out if you have questions about upcoming opportunities.

Tips for a Successful Application

Applying for a student job can feel intimidating—especially if it’s your first time. At NAITSA, we want to help you put your best foot forward! Here are some helpful tips and information to make your application stand out and plan ahead for roles you’re excited about.

A few small details can make your application shine:

Read the Job Posting Carefully

Look for the key skills and qualifications we’re asking for and make sure your resume and cover letter highlight how you meet them.

Tip: It’s okay if you don’t meet every requirement — focus on your strengths and what you’re eager to learn.

Create a Clear, Easy-to-Read Resume

Your resume is often the first impression we get of you, so keep it simple, focused, and one page if possible.

Include:

  • Your name and contact info at the top
  • Your education (program and expected graduation date)
  • Relevant experience from work, volunteering, or classes
  • Bullet points that describe what you did and learned
  • Clean formatting and no spelling errors
Write a Short, Genuine Cover Letter

Your cover letter doesn’t need to be formal, just genuine! Tell us why you want to work with NAITSA and what makes you a good fit. Make sure it follows the cover letter instructions (if any) and always double check it’s addressed to the right person and company!

Keep it to 2–4 short paragraphs:

  • Why you’re interested in the role
  • What skills or experiences you bring
  • How it connects to your program or goals
  • Your availability during the school year
Prepare for the Interview

If you’re invited to an interview, that means we already see potential in you!

  • Be ready to share examples of teamwork, problem-solving, or leadership.
  • It’s okay to pause and think before answering — we know it can be nerve-wracking.
  • Ask questions! It shows you’re genuinely interested.
  • Be yourself — we value authenticity over perfection.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • Forgetting to attach your resume or cover letter
  • Typos or formatting errors
  • Submitting a generic or improperly addressed cover letter
  • Not mentioning your availability or program
